The Kremlin has increasingly resorted to blackouts since Ukraine successfully launched drone attacks deep into Russia using mobile internet signals.
Sometimes the outages can last for days.
In June, according to the NGO Na Svjazi, this occurred 654 times, a tenfold increase from the previous month, setting a record. The blackouts are happening throughout the country, from Moscow to Siberia.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, this is done for security reasons.
Blocking the internet is becoming a common practice among governments in conflict zones. For example, the Iranian government shut down internet traffic for twelve days during the Israeli attacks on the country.
