The Kremlin has called for restraint in the use of nuclear threats. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov is responding to the nuclear submarines that US President Donald Trump dispatched to Russia on Friday.
Trump dispatched the submarines precisely in response to the words of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev regularly alludes to nuclear escalation and reminded Trump on social media that Russia also possesses nuclear weapons.
Trump called Medvedev’s statements “very provocative” and said he was sending the submarines closer to Russia. He did not clarify whether the submarines were nuclear-powered or nuclear-weapon-powered.
“We think everyone should be very, very careful with nuclear rhetoric,” Peskov responded. The spokesman, however, tried to downplay the significance of Trump’s decision by stating that the submarines were already combat-ready.
