China Opens World’s Largest Legoland in Shanghai

China opened its first Legoland on Saturday, the largest amusement park of the Lego chain in the world. Thousands of visitors went to the new park in Shanghai, which is intended to boost tourism in China.

Enthusiastic Lego lovers rushed into the park at the opening, dressed in theme shirts and waving flags. They braved the heat to explore the enormous terrain. Visitors were welcomed by a giant Lego figure of over 26 meters high. 85 million Lego bricks were used for the constructions in the amusement park.

“I like to play with Lego myself and we have countless sets at home. So I wanted to go to Legoland as soon as possible,” said Shi, a 35-year-old resident of the nearby city of Hangzhou. He visited the park with his wife and child.

Beijing has announced subsidies to make domestic travel more affordable for Chinese and wants local governments to actively promote their tourist attractions through social media.
