Proton is joining a US lawsuit against Apple, alleging that Apple’s App Store policies are anti-competitive and violate US antitrust laws. The case follows a similar ruling in Europe.
Proton believes the tech giant’s policies are harmful to both developers and consumers, Proton said.
The Swiss company points to a recent €500 million fine imposed on Apple in the EU for violating European competition law. The European Commission is forcing Apple to allow the sale of iOS apps outside the App Store.
Proton wants Apple to do the same in the US and is therefore joining the class action lawsuit filed in May by a group of South Korean developers.
‘Negative consequences for privacy, freedom and democracy’
Proton emphasizes the importance of this lawsuit for the future of the internet. According to Proton, Apple’s App Store policy has negative consequences for privacy, freedom and democracy.
The company argues that Apple’s control of the App Store leads to censorship and restrictions on developers, as well as a worse user experience and higher prices for consumers. Proton says it is seeking permanent changes to App Store policies.
